It was a sunny day with light breezes and temperatures forecasted to reach the mid-50s. Perfect conditions for a long run! We arrived at Bruce & Kathy's B&B at 6:45am ready to drive Bruce to meet Mark S. at the starting line. This was Bruce's big day, first marathon EVER! He was ready!
We met Mark S. at the predetermined parking lot with no trouble navigating around streets closed due to the race. We all walked together to the starting line only a few blocks away. Energy built as we saw more and more runners and spectators. I noticed some neat Richmond scenery along the way. Nearer the start there was music booming and the announcer was rattling off instructions of where people should or should not stand. There were two races already begun, the 8K and 13.1m. We cheered for our fellow athletes!
Bruce and Mark S. found their pace group near the starting line. They were staying warm until go-time.
Then a quick warm-up dance,
and some last minute strategizing,
and then START!
We wondered if this guy would really juggle the entire way.
Can't take cruisers anywhere...we salvaged what we could of the dropped clothes. Brian came away with a nice Reebok synthetic shirt.
More interesting Richmond sights.
Here come the runners! Rounding the corner at mile 5 - just warming up!
Kathy, Brian, and I paused for a delicious breakfast. We needed full bellies to stay in tip-top cheering form!
Over the river and through the woods we go to mile 15 - talk about running aground, good thing we didn't come up the James River!
High fives and hugs at mile 15 - looking GOOD!
Bruce and Mark S. were so fast we missed them near mile 17 - back into the city we go!
Holding their pace at mile 19
Brian knew Bruce & Mark S. would need at boost at mile 23 - almost there!
We had our own race to the finish line having parked just a bit farther out of the way than predicted. We took a nice detour around the capital building.
All bridges lead to runners island...will we ever find them?

What a wonderful surprise having you guys at the marathon. And you were fabulous cheerleaders showing up all over the course. I'm happy about finishing my first marathon but you guys made it terrific.
