Laundry Day at Black Point

Continuing along our way south we were enjoying short sailing days, hopping to new islands to explore for a day before getting underway once again. We had learned from other cruisers what most of the towns had to offer; the best grocery, laundry, and where to find happy hours. Every time we mentioned that our next stop would be Black Point we received the same response from other cruisers, "oh, going to do some laundry." It was a statement, not a question. Apparently Black Point is THE laundry stop in the Exumas. So we decided it was time to investigate as I had been squirreling away dirty clothes. We had some help from our friend, Tom, in locating the laundromat. It had a conveniently located dinghy dock along the shoreline of the harbor. Inside we met Ida. She runs the laundromat, makes delicious conch fritters, and does hair cuts and hair braids. The laundromat had some general store items for sale and some handcrafted jewelry and hand woven items. Laundry cost $3.50/load; I had two loads ready for washing and planned to dry everything out on deck since it was a warm, breezy day. We strolled down the street, chatted with Tom, browsed the book swap shelves, and scanned the wall filled with cruisers' boat cards (which we found some familiar names).

Back at the boat with clean clothes it smelled lavender fresh as I hung the clothes and sheets out to dry on the lifelines and over the booms. We took advantage of the other draws to Black Point which are trash disposal (make a donation) and free RO water (reverse osmosis water for drinking) at the government dock. What a treat!

Hi! I'd sent you and email after finding your boat card on the "networking" wall of boaters' cards in the laundromat. Maybe it is now an outdated email address...anyhoo, we didn't go to Lorraine's or get any bread. We make our own bread often so are rarely in the market for that.

Glad to hear that the price of doing laundry at Blackpoint hasn't gone up. Have you visited Lorraine's cafe or get bread from her Mom? Lorraine's Mom use to charge $4 a loaf.

We are finally down in Lake Worth. Having issues with boat insurance needs and may need to do a quick haul out for survey to satisfy the company but we are on our way over soon! Hope to see you somewhere along the way.
