When Life Deals Lemons...

  Tuesday, July 9, 2013 / Stephanie / Uncategorized

We've got a new motto this week:  "When life give you lemons, F#@! the lemons and bail!" (From Forgetting Sarah Marshall - a comedy that is near and dear to our hearts.) Once again a change in tack for Rode Trip.  We've done all we can to acquire appropriate third-party liability insurance in order to travel into the Mediterranean, and the fact of the matter is we just can't get insured.  At least not affordably; not from our current location in Bermuda.  We've conferred with cruisers and landlubbers alike to search for loopholes.  As I shared in an earlier post it seems that the foreign companies won't cover a USA Documented vessel.  We've used a Bermuda address for our mooring location.  We've even pondered documenting the boat in Bermuda, but that is a lot of hoops considering we're newly renewed in the USA for this upcoming year.  USA companies won't provide third-party liability only, they want to delve out full coverage policies (pricey policies) and they want an out of water survey within this year to identify exactly what they are insuring.  We've had responses from companies, USA and foreign, that simply won't entertain coverage because of the age of our boat (it seems to me that our 38-year-old Rode Trip has still got spunk).  Yes, we've even had a few recommendations to just fake it and create our own proof of coverage form.  Not a bright idea since we can't afford a 2.5 million dollar Italian mega yacht right now. So we were bummed, initially, to not travel to all the wonderful places we'd just researched.  And we were bummed, initially, to not spend the winter with some very good cruising friends who have already splashed into the Mediterranean Sea.  However, we have to figure out what works best for us; and given several factors (finances and hurricane season being dominant) we've decided to spend our summer in...drum roll please...MAINE.  So rather than being bummed, although we are still tossing those lemons, we're happy to be nearer our family and friends for the summer and we know there are many many places in Maine to explore. Our voyage into the Atlantic Ocean has proven one thing:  the world is smaller than it seems and offers endless opportunity.  We're thrilled to continue our cruising lifestyle! We set sail today with the intent to land in Mt. Desert Island, Bar Harbor, Maine.  Keep an eye on our voyage; we're still accepting reservations...this time a bit closer to home.

Hooray!! We should try to finally get together on the water...throw us some dates of when you'll be at the boat and we'll try to fit them into our formulating schedule...schedule, now that's a scary thought for a cruiser ;)

We spent some time last summer in Maine - it will be interesting to see it again with a new perspective now being confident and comfortable living aboard. Maine has SO MUCH to offer! If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to let us know. Meantime, I'll try to keep the photos and best anchorages coming!

We've got plenty to see right in Maine, currently being flooded with plans to visit friends...I hope to get some great pics and visit some places we didn't see last year. Nova Scotia would be awesome too if there's time to spare - I sure don't like being cold!

We've certainly increased our odds of our paths crossing...hope you and John are well. We've just arrived at Mt. Desert Island, ME and are quickly settling and making summer plans for visits with friends - so many people, so little time before it gets cold again ;)

We truly appreciate you're sharing this contact with us regarding our insurance troubles. As you probably know, we've postponed our venture to the Med. This information may come in handy in the future though....until then, still many places to explore without the hassle. Cheers!

I look forward to hearing what you think about Maine, as that is one of the options we are evaluating for hurricane season next summer. Lorraine S/V Changes

Insurance blues! We can relate being in hurricane central, but on the brightside this is the PERFECT time of year to explore the northeast and Canada. I went to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island when I was a teenager in the summer and it was awesome. I kayaked on the "Brudenell river" in PEI. We aren't planning to do the Med either. One day maybe...maybe by airplane and in hotels but not on our first go around.

Cool....my family has a house in Winter Harbor across Frenchman's Bay from Mt. Desert. I will be up there 7/19-7/21 and we have beds and showers. Winter Harbor is grand and looks out at MDI, and my biased view is that the view is better looking at Mt. Desert. Sorry you are bummed but insurance companies just suck, that's the way it is! Let me know if you want me to alert my parents if you are interested.
